Gregory House was born on January 19, 1959 to a homemaker and a marine. At the time, he was in Ohio, but House doesn't feel any ties to a particular part of the country (or even the world) as John House's marine commission meant that his family moved from place to place relatively often. Some of the places that stand out in House's memory are Egypt, where he used to play around in old tombs and Japan, where he discovered his calling to be a doctor. House's home life wasn't the best, as his father would often arbitrarily punish him by putting him out in the backyard to sleep or making him take a bath in icy cold water. These punishments stayed with House until he buried them and just became bitter about his parents, avoiding them at every turn. He eventually went off to university, studying at Johns Hopkins before getting expelled (for cheating off a student who wasn't very bright, of all things) and finishing his education at the University of Michigan. It was while he attended Michigan that he met his future boss, Lisa Cuddy, and at some point had a sexual relationship with her. The ghost of this past "relationship" defines his relationship with Cuddy now, leading to highly sexualized banter and a close friendship between the two of them despite the conflicts they have about how exactly to go about practicing medicine. This connection with Cuddy was what led House to work for her at the prestigious Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital as House is, by Cuddy's own admission, "a very good doctor who couldn't get hired at a blood bank." While at PPTH, House is afforded freedoms that he wouldn't get at another hospital, and continually pushes his limits with Cuddy in order to solve impossible cases. For a man that doesn't have any family or nostalgic ties to "home," PPTH certainly fills that capacity for House. It was at PPTH that he met his best friend, boy wonder oncologist James Wilson, and one of the most significant girlfriends he's had, Stacy Warner. While the latter is ancient history (or not so ancient, as Stacy's return to the hospital rekindled old feelings and House even slept with her once before sending her back to be with her new husband), House's relationship with Wilson is one of the few constants in his life. Another constant, until recently, was House's team of fellows. While House had fellows before his current ones, the first time his team was a stable unit was the period between 2004 and 2007, where Robert Chase, Allison Cameron and Eric Foreman were his direct subordinates. While their relationships are mostly work-only, occasionally House has shown an interest in his fellows outside of work, such as going on a date with Cameron to a monster truck rally. His fellows also care a lot about him, as evidenced in the episode "Half-Wit," where they work around the clock to diagnose House's alleged cancer and all go to his apartment at the end to inform him that he wasn't dying. However, the idyllic stasis of House's team wasn't meant to last and in the spring of 2007, he fired Dr. Robert Chase after the resignations of Foreman and Cameron. He started the fall of 2007 by "auditioning" new fellows. House comes to Hearts and Minds following the episode "97 Seconds," after he tries to electrocute himself in an attempt to see the afterlife. |
| PERSONALITY |
Gregory House is quite possibly one of the most unpleasant people on the planet. He is, however, utterly brilliant, which draws people to him despite his horrible personality. House is blunt and straight-talking, not one to mince words or use any modicum of tact. While his best friend Wilson and his boss, Lisa Cuddy, attempt to instill in him the virtues of being tactful and playing politics (see the Vogler arc and the Tritter arc), House finds this utterly unnecessary. He isn't a doctor to make people feel better, after all, he's a doctor to cure them. House is fairly solitary and doesn't open up easily—except in certain cases. For example, within one week of meeting Stacy Warner, she had already moved into House's apartment and the two of them enjoyed a five year relationship. The only other person he shares such a close relationship with is James Wilson, his best friend for over ten years—again, an exception. For the most part, House spends his time working or with his music, taking solace in the patterns and consistency of music and his own company. While many would like to attribute House's more curmudgeonly aspects to the infarction in his thigh, there is evidence that he was rather grumpy before losing the use of his right leg. Stacy says, for example, that House was mostly the same before his leg and that his personality is intense, like hot and spicy curry. While you might have a craving for curry occasionally, too much exposure will burn off the roof of your mouth. Such is House's vibrant and caustic personality—magnetic and drawing, but dangerous in large quantities. House likes to play games, not only with video game systems, but also with the people and patients in his life. Rather than just think quietly about a case and diagnose it traditionally, House wants to do the outrageous and the spectacular and go overboard, pitting his fellows against each other in a race to the diagnosis. He continually challenges his employees, forcing them to examine themselves in closer detail and to examine their faults in an attempt to groom them for something greater. House is, surprisingly enough, good with children, able to get down on their level and interact with them in a way that he can't really interact with adults. He also shows signs of suffering from depression, as evidenced by his outlandish behavior and tendency to push people away when they get uncomfortably close. House is the perfect example of the brilliant madman—one step either way and he might lose it entirely. |
